Special Collections and College Archives/Musselman Library invites current students (including seniors who will graduate in May) to submit applications for the Diane Werley Smith ’73 summer internship in Special Collections. This internship is available to an undergraduate who is interested in special collections, archives, public history, or museum studies as a profession.

Special Collections and College Archives is home to the College’s collection of rare books, letters, diaries, College publications, photographs, historic maps, memorabilia, artifacts, oral histories, and media. The College Archives also includes documents related to the history of the College.

The summer intern will be introduced to a variety of archival skills such as processing collections, answering research questions, cataloging, book repair and conservation, digital projects, preparing exhibits, etc. At the completion of the summer, the intern will have processed at least one archival collection and produced a finding aid to assist researchers.

The Special Collections staff will make every effort to tailor the internship duties to the talents and interests of the intern. A few examples of the work an intern might engage in:

  • Assist in processing new accessions: gaining basic physical and intellectual control of College records or manuscript collections, preparing finding aids and indices
  • Assist in research: providing reference service to patrons
  • Assist in digital projects: transcribing letters, researching, creating metadata, working with the CONTENTdm database for online collections
  • Assist with archival rehousing of materials and book/paper conservation

For a sampling of our unique collections, please explore the Special Collections and College Archives website and our GettDigital Collections.

To apply, submit a letter indicating your interest in this position, your educational goals, any relevant courses, a copy of your resume including activities, and the names of at least two campus references for us to contact. Please be specific about why you want an internship in Special Collections and College Archives and how you think it will help you obtain your goals.

Please email letter and resume to Carolyn Sautter, Director of Special Collections and College Archives: csautter@gettysburg.edu.
