Position: Archives Intern (10 positions)

The State Archives serves as the central depository for government records of permanent value. Its holdings date from Maryland’s founding in 1634, and include colonial and state executive, legislative, and judicial records; county probate, land, and court records; church records; business records; state publications and reports; and special collections of private papers, maps, photographs, and newspapers.

Schedule/Hours: 35 hours per week

Time Frame:  Wednesday, May 31st through Tuesday, August 8th

Compensation 9.55 – 12.07 per hour

The Maryland State Archives in Annapolis is dedicated to preserving Maryland’s records and history.

The Archives’ Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for students interested in archival and library science, history, museum studies, and document conservation to gain valuable experience in the field.

Student Interns will engage in a variety of activities related to the management, preservation, use and circulation of archival collections. Individual intern assignments will vary, but duties may include:

Assisting in the operations of the public search room;

Processing and cataloging records and collection items;

Handling, identifying, and inventorying records and collection items;

Digitizing records;

Conducting in-depth research on various topics in Maryland history;

Conserving and rehousing documents, library books and other collection items.

Job duties vary by project, but will include:

Cleaning and mending of documents and books

Identifying, inventorying and properly housing records and collection items

Digitizing records

Retrieving records for patrons

Responding to written reference inquires

Conducting biographical and thematic research on topics in Maryland history

Assist with the Archives’ social media outreach

Complete required program reports and evaluations.


In order to be considered for an internship, you must:

Be a current student or recent graduate (within the last year) of undergraduate studies or graduate studies


Be a current resident of the state of Maryland or an enrolled student in a Maryland school.

Additional Salary Information: Paid opportunities are focused in the summer months (June – August). Additional unpaid opportunities are available year-round for co-op and academic credit.
