Position: Archives Intern

Location: Durham, North Carolina

Schedule/Hours: Maximum of 19 hours a week (for 42 weeks or a total of 807 hours), must be scheduled between Monday–Friday, 8:30-4:30

Time Frame:  Academic year, beginning July 1, 2017-2018

Compensation $15.00 per hour

Description:

Under the supervision of the Medical Center Archives staff, the intern will gain hands-on experience working with analog, digital, and hybrid archival collections. This may include arrangement and description, rehousing materials, performing basic preservation tasks, assisting with new acquisitions, researching individuals or events covered by a collection, entering data into the collections management system, and creating inventories and finding aids. Smaller amounts of time may also be dedicated to reference, exhibit preparation, and social media outreach as determined by both need and intern interest.

Requirements:
-Knowledge of archival principles, theories, and best practices
-Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
-Currently enrolled in a graduate level, degree granting program in Library Science and/or History
-Strong communications skills
-Ability to work independently

Preferred:
-Experience working in an archives or library
-1st year student
-Interest in medicine and/or history

The Duke University Medical Center Archives collects, preserves, and provides access to materials documenting the history of the medical center community, from the 1930s to the present. The Archives is comprised of over 250 collections containing a variety of materials, such as administrative and departmental records, personal manuscripts, photographs, publications, audiovisual materials, artifacts, and more.
