Schedule/Hours: Part-time Flexible. Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00AM and 5:00PM

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 20 hours per work week (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per work week during breaks; Winter, Spring & Summer.

Time Frame:  1 year commitment

Compensation $11.50 – $12.50 an hour

The California State Archives hires two graduate student interns to work 20 hours a week. The California State Archives Graduate Intern Program provides a structured training program for its interns, which includes explanation and hands–on experience in many stages of archival work from accessioning to reference. In exchange, interns must commit to 20 hours a week of work and at least a year commitment.

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to work well with public and staff, and as a team member. Good research skills and willingness to learn new skills. Enjoy working independently. The ability to pay close attention to detail and produce high–quality work is a must. Good computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office programs. Specific experience in archival work is not necessary, but interest in California history and government is encouraged.

Duties and Responsibilities
Depending on circumstances, and after appropriate training by other archivists, each intern will:

– process documents received into the State Archives

– compile finding aids and guides to archival holdings and edit them for publication

– provide reference services to scholars and the general public in the use of archival materials

– receive records that are transferred to the State Archives

– retrieve and refile documents requested by researchers

– use electronic collection management systems to enter and revise information about collections

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in history, library science, or related field, be able to make a year commitment (during which their student status must be maintained), and, most importantly, be seriously considering a career in archival work.

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.
