Description:

The Archive Intern will assist the Brand Archivist & Historian in collecting, preserving, and sharing Carhartt’s 128 year legacy, allowing both associates and customers to forge meaningful connections with the company’s history. This is a unique opportunity for those who have an interest in Carhartt’s long and colorful history, its strong connection to Michigan and the city of Detroit, and its ongoing commitment to workers everywhere. Additionally, this internship will provide distinct opportunities for students with an interest in garment and textile preservation.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to work in an up-and-coming corporate archive that has rapidly become the comprehensive source for reliable information on the history of the company and its products. The work of interns has been integral in growing the archive’s digital collections and establishing foundational processes and procedures for the archive moving forward.

Interns will benefit from exposure to a wide variety of archival tasks. Projects include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Research (e.g. iconic garment histories, corporate history).
  • Implementation of taxonomy/controlled vocabulary.
  • Processing, rehousing and digitization of physical assets.
  • Supporting the resident archivist with day-to-day activities, such as research request fulfillment and the preparation of historical content for social media channels.

Working Conditions:

  • Typical office environment, sharing an office with the Brand Archivist & Historian.
  • Extended periods of time sitting, standing, typing on a computer is required.
  • Ability to lift boxes up to 30 lbs.
  • Carhartt is a tobacco free workplace

 

Entry Requirements:

  • Graduate students earning MLIS, MSI, or History MA degrees with concentrations in Archival Administration, Library Science, and/or Digital Content Management.
  • Familiarity with archival best practices (particularly in digital preservation).
  • Experience with archival research.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Basic experience with Adobe Photoshop/Acrobat and a content and/or digital asset management system (e.g. Adobe Bridge) preferred.
