Objective: To support the Medical Editor of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), while learning about humanitarian medical research and medical/scientific publishing for an international nongovernmental organization.

Overview: The Medical Editor of MSF-USA works with medical and field staff to disseminate research findings and perspectives, and to increase the visibility of MSF medical research within medical, research, and policymaking communities. This is done through peer-reviewed journal articles; scientific conference abstracts, presentations, and posters; MSF technical publications; and special projects and events.

  • The Medical Editing Intern will work with the Medical Editor on further developing and updating a database of MSF research publications.

Duties:

  • Assist with further developing database tools to store and disseminate information on MSF publications (50%)
  • Perform literature searches for articles on various medical topics (20%)
  • Enter data on MSF research publications into databases (20%)
  • Other tasks as assigned (10%)

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word
  • Proficiency in medical literature searches (PubMed, Google Scholar)
  • Good understanding of scientific/medical publication practices
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Strong interest in medical/scientific publishing and humanitarian medicine and research

Preferred Skills:

  • Programming experience in Visual Basic
  • Background knowledge of data structures, relationship-based databases.
  • Expertise and interest in knowledge management and/or outcomes research
  • Experience using reference management tools such as Mendeley
