Position Resident Archivist for Yale Special Collections – Manuscript &Archives50368BR

Eligibility Recent graduates w/ Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree, with formal training in archival theory and practice. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in museum studies or a related discipline in the humanities or social sciences may be substituted for a master’s degree in library science.

Experience arranging and describing or providing public services for manuscript and/or archival collections.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience processing literary or historical papers. Experience cataloging manuscript materials in MARC format. Experience using ArchivesSpace. Reading knowledge of at least one non-English language.

Location: New Haven, CT

Company/Organization  The Manuscript Unit is a division of the Technical Services Department. The Manuscript Unit supports the Beinecke Library’s robust acquisition program and is responsible for the accessioning, processing, and cataloging of the library’s manuscript collections. The manuscript collections range from ancient papyri and medieval manuscripts to twenty-first century literary archives. In addition to literary and historical manuscripts, formats include photography and artwork, audio and moving image recordings, born-digital files, and music.

he Resident Archivist for Yale Special Collections, under the supervision the Head Arrangement and Description, Manuscripts and Archives, and with guidance from the Special Collections Steering Committee, is primarily responsible for completing archival description and collections management projects for several special collections units, including Arts, Divinity, Music, and Medical, in the Yale University Library. The Resident Archivist will work with the individual units to determine project goals and outcomes; develop project plans and documentation; implement work plans, collaborate with additional departments and staff in the Library as appropriate based on project needs; and may train and supervise student assistants.

Assume a variety of responsibilities related to manuscript and archival material in all formats, including selection, appraisal, arrangement and description, preservation, and access and outreach. 2. Work in libraries across university campuses to meet the needs of local, national, and international teaching and research communities. 3. Assist with management of printed collections, as assigned. 4. Assist, if necessary, with disaster recovery efforts. 5. May perform other duties as assigned.

The Residency is designed for early-career professionals who want the opportunity to learn about academic archives and special collections and acquire core competencies and skills in archival technical services. The program allows the Resident Archivist a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic, production-oriented unit within a large special collections library with an active collection development program and to participate in a challenging and rewarding work environment. A flexible program will be developed to balance the Resident’s individual goals and interests with the Library’s needs. In addition, the Resident’s professional interests will be supported with a mentoring program, professional development opportunities, and participation on library committees.
